As with all volunteer run societies, at the Bromyard and District Local History Society, we are always looking to recruit more helpers and there are a wide variety of tasks with which you could help.
There are two places in Bromyard at which you could make a huge difference: The Local History Centre in Sherford Street and at History on Broad Street.
- Downstairs at the Centre we always need volunteers to meet and greet visitors and show them around the Exhibition Room. Also manning the shop selling books, calendars and cards, answering visitors’ questions and directing them upstairs to the Research Room.
- In the Research Room there are (usually) two members who can help visitors with enquiries about their family history, the houses in which they live: or more general questions about the local area.
- Upstairs there is also our library of reference books and copies available to borrow by members.
- Are you happy to phone or email suppliers for paper, staples, laminating sheets, and general office stationery? Is this a task you can see yourself helping with?
- Volunteer at our Hobs premises on Broad St – engaging with the public and selling some of our extensive range of books, gifts and cards.
- Engaging with our local artisans and craftspeople to ensure new and replacement stock for our HOBS premises.
- Are you very artistic and would enjoy helping to change the window displays in either building?
- Would you like to be one of the team of people who lead History Walks Around Bromyard? Don’t panic; you would be supplied with the information from which to tell the stories.
Then there is the “behind the scenes” aspect.
- We are currently digitising our archive catalogue which involves scanning in the photos and documents held in the archive. Would you like to join this vibrant team of workers? They meet on Monday mornings at the Centre.
- Perhaps you would like to write articles for our website or help keep it up to date?
- You might be a frustrated writer and would like to write a monthly article for Bromyard Info? Or an article for the annual Journal?

- Or are you interested in finance and would like to help with the accounting?
- Finally there is always the opportunity of an organisational role such as being a member of the committee and help to steer the Society for the future.
If any of this sounds a bit daunting don’t worry – you will get a full training in whatever area of the Society’s work interests you. Some people are “people persons” and some are more “task persons” or “organisational persons” so, whatever your skills and inclinations, we can use them and help you to grow them.
Please contact: info@bromyardhistorysociety.org.uk or call in at either of the BDLHS venues, and we will be happy to give you more information and offer a “taster” session.
